There are various ways to determine the ideal ROBOTIS Kit, so we've listed

a few criteria to assist you in selecting the appropriate ROBOTIS product!

 

1. User's Robot Construction Skill

Currently, ROBOTIS offers three ways to put their robots together: 

ROBOTIS Plate & Rivet System

- "12 MM Plates & Rivets” - 12MM refers to the distance between adjacent rivet hole centers.  The actual rivet’s diameter is 7mm, and it uses a single-part design targeted at the youngest users (Ages 6+).  The PLAY 600 and 700 kits utilize the 12MM Plate & Rivets for creative design. 

“6 MM Plates & Rivets” – 6MM refers to the distance between adjacent rivet hole centers.  The actual rivet’s diameter is 3.5mm, and it uses a 2-component design with an outer sleeve and a stem-rivet.  This fastening approach requires more manual dexterity and is designed for mid-teens (Ages 8+).  The PLAY 300, DREAM, and ROBOTIS MINI utilize the 6MM Plate & Rivets for creative design and more advanced robot design concepts. 

Traditional Fastener Solutions

- "Standard Nuts & Bolts" - The third fastening approach uses small standard screws and nuts and is designed for users Ages 12+. The STEM, ROBOTIS Premium and GP Kits utilize the Standard Nuts and Bolts for advanced robot construction and allows the use of more advanced hardware such as smart servos (DYNAMIXEL) for higher learning utilizing ROBOTIS Technology. 

 

2. User's Software Skill Level 

ROBOTIS offers solutions for different entry points and technical skill levels to learn and experiment with programming software for control of our robot kits:

For General Use with ROBOTIS Kits:

- R+ ScratchThis helper app allows use of MIT’s Scratch 2.0 block-programming environment for a fast and easy way to learn programming basics with the ROBOTIS Play 700 and included CM-50 controller. (Ages 6+)

- RoboPlus 2.0Our proprietary R+ Task 2.0 application is a hybrid drag-and-drop graphical user interface (GUI) for programming ROBOTIS controllers and actuators while R+ Motion 2.0 is a powerful motion editing tool for quickly and easily creating complex robot poses and fluid movements. Use of R+ Design provides a 3D-interactive, step-by-step assembly guide and may be used to prototype new design creations based on the ROBOTIS parts catalog with “Inventor Mode.” These software applications are a great fit for PLAY, DREAM, STEM and BIOLOID kits in addition to the ROBOTIS Mini humanoid kit. (Ages 8+)

- RoboPlus MobileThese mobile versions of our RoboPlus 2.0 software can be used with Google Android and Apple iOS-enabled devices and are available for download from the Google Play App Store and Apple App Store, respectively. (Ages 8+)


For use with ROBOTIS OpenCM9.04 Controller:

- OpenCM IDEUsers who are looking to expand their C-Language programming skills in an Arduino-like environment will find this application to be a natural progression with an API and included libraries designed for advanced programming with ROBOTIS Dynamixel actuators and OLLO sensors. (Ages 12+)

- Arduino IDEWe have recently ported the essential libraries to allow programming with ROBOTIS OpenCM9.04 inside the Arduino programming application – users can now take advantage of popular Arduino sketches and sensor tutorials on a controller that provides native integration with the Dynamixel intelligent actuator system!

For Advanced Users and Custom Controllers:

- Embedded CCustom firmware exploration is an option for users who wish to dive deeper into embedded programming with the ROBOTIS CM-530 controller in BIOLOID and STEM kits. (Ages 15+)

- Dynamixel SDKFor the advanced user who wishes to implement their own embedded controller solution from a Single-Board Computer (SBC) we have provided a cross-platform, multi-language Source Development Kit (SDK) that can be used to accelerate comprehension for custom ROBOTIS Dynamixel control source code.
